Most complaints about a device turn out to be complaints about how it was set up. Thin vapour, a harsh throat hit, cotton that tastes burnt after two days: each of those has a cause you can act on. Getting your **vape settings** right is a short, ordered process, and doing it in the wrong order is what makes it feel like weeks of guesswork.

## The order that makes vape settings work

There is a sequence, and it is not negotiable. Read the coil first, set power second, adjust airflow third, and only then consider whether the liquid in the tank suits the result. Reversing any two of those steps is the usual reason people end up chasing a problem.

The reason is mechanical. The coil defines the power range that will heat it correctly. The power defines how much vapour and heat is produced. The airflow defines how that vapour is diluted and cooled before it reaches you. Each step constrains the next.

Two practical points follow. Prime a new coil before use, meaning wet the exposed cotton with liquid and let the pod or tank stand for a few minutes after filling. And match the liquid to the coil, since thicker high VG liquid struggles to wick through a high resistance coil designed for thinner mixes.

## Setting wattage without burning cotton

Start at the bottom of the coil's stated range. Take two or three draws, wait a moment, then raise the power in small steps of two or three watts and repeat. You are listening for the point where flavour becomes full and warmth is comfortable, and stopping there.

Going higher does not improve anything. Past the point of full flavour you get heat, faster liquid consumption and cotton that dries out ahead of the wicking, which is the actual mechanism behind a burnt taste. The coil is not failing, it is being asked to vaporise liquid that has not arrived yet.

If flavour is thin and the vapour cool, you are below the useful part of the range and can continue upward. If the draw is hot at the bottom of the range, suspect a wicking problem or an old coil rather than the setting.

Many current pods handle this for you by reading the coil and applying a suitable output. That is a reasonable default, and on a device with a smart mode there is no obligation to override it.

## Airflow is the last adjustment, and the most personal

Once power is settled, airflow decides the character of the draw. Closing it down restricts the airway, concentrates the vapour and produces a warmer, more flavour dense draw with a stronger throat sensation, suited to higher strength salt liquids.

Opening it up dilutes the vapour with more air, cools it and increases volume, which suits lower strength liquid and lower resistance coils. It also increases how much liquid you get through, which is the trade-off nobody mentions.

Set the slider to the midpoint, take a few draws, then move it in small increments in one direction only until the draw feels right. Changing airflow and wattage at the same time is the fastest way to lose track of what helped.

There is an interaction worth knowing. A more open airflow cools the coil, which is why heavy vapour setups tolerate more power. A tight airflow traps heat around the coil, so the same wattage feels considerably hotter. Treat the two controls as a pair.

## Matching liquid to your vape settings

The last variable is the liquid, and it is often the real culprit. Higher strength nicotine salts are designed for restricted draws at low power. Putting them in a low resistance coil at high wattage produces an unpleasant amount of nicotine per draw.

The reverse also fails. A thick high VG shortfill in a tight, high resistance pod wicks slowly and gives dry, muted draws. Under British rules ready mixed nicotine liquid is sold in containers of no more than 10 ml at a maximum strength of 20 mg per ml, so the strength you choose is a real decision rather than an unlimited scale.

If your settings are correct and the result still disappoints, change one thing: the liquid. It resolves more cases than another two watts ever will.

## Common mistakes worth avoiding

Four errors account for most problems. Firing a new coil without priming it. Pushing wattage above the coil's stated range. Vaping with the tank close to empty, which starves the wick exactly when it is working hardest. And leaving airflow fully open on a coil intended for a restricted draw.

A fifth is expecting a coil to last indefinitely. Depending on use, liquid and power, a coil typically gives one to three weeks of service. A gradual loss of flavour is the normal signal to change it, and pushing on afterwards produces the burnt taste people blame on the device.
